COMMUNIQUE
After the announcement of monetary reform in Ukraine, the mass media that publish in the Roman alphabet began to use various spellings in their materials to denote the new monetary unit of Ukraine. Generally, these spellings incorrectly recreate the phonetic and graphic specifies of the official name "гривня" (for instance - grivna, hrivna, etc.) and do not conform to the state standards accepted in Ukraine.
Therefore,the National Bank of Ukraine, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Commission for Legal Terminology announce that in accordance with the authority vested in the Ukrainian Commission for Legal Terminology by the Decree of the President of Ukraine N 796 of 23 August 1995, the Commission approved by its Resolution N 9 of 19 April 1996 the standards for romanization of Ukrainian names (transliteration table and the rules to it), according to which the name of the Ukrainian monetary unit "гривня" shall be recreated as "hryvnia." This spelling was approved in the official English translation of the Constitution of Ukraine.
The aforementioned Resolution of the Commission was published in the governmental newspaper Uriadovyi Kurier of 4 July 1996 and was communicated to the embassies of foreign states and representatives of international organizations in Ukraine by the Note of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
